First Impressions from a Toronto Real Estate Professional

As a Sales Representative in the Toronto Real Estate Market first impressions mean a lot.  I’m first to admit that not all my first impressions have been the best in my life, but through the years I have definitely improved on them. Whether it is business or personal or both, first impressions go a long way.

In my line of work they mean everything. First impressions can make or break you in business and I value them tremendously. Have you ever been turned off by someone’s first impression? I have. Granted, I’m also a strong believer in second impressions or second chances because someone could be off that day or sick or whatever. I don’t know, I guess I like to give people the benefit of the doubt in most cases. In saying that try to make your first impression as best as it can possibly be. A few things which could truly improve your chances of a good first impression:

  • 1. Dress to the nines! Before you even speak someone is sizing you up by your appearance and that could be your first impression done right there. Dress for the occasion. Even if you are meeting friends, dress well. Who knows who they could be bringing with them ie. parents, business partners, spouses etc.

  • 2. Eye contact.  Always have eye contact. It projects confidence and engages you with your subject.

  • 3. Be polite.  Get your manners in check. Open doors, don’t chew gum (I’ve been guilty of it to not have bad breath – see #6).

  • 4. Knowledge!  Know what you’re talking about. Whatever business you are in, be sure to know your product inside and out. Knowledge is power! It is impressive for a first impression.

  • 5. Scent well. Do not over power with perfume or cologne, but a nice subtle scent will do the trick.

  • 6. Breath! Although we all suffer it, be sure to have a breath neutralizer for any type of encounter.

  • 7. Firm hand shake. I guess it depends on the situation. Adapt the handshake to the person. Go in firm, but you may have to soften.
