Toronto Basement Flooded
King Street West at Sudbury Street. Wow!
What a crazy week it has been in Toronto. Storms, floods, power outages, closed streets, Ferrari’s’ abandoned, flooded basements, cars floating down the street, GO Train rescues, I could go on and on.
With this post I want to focus on a topic that I experienced growing up at my parents home, FLOODED BASEMENTS. The floods were never really that serious because of decent drainage and usually had to do with a faulty washing machine, but yesterday I experienced first hand a fully flooded basement at my future in-laws home.

They live in a prestigious neighbourhood in Toronto surrounded by newer multi-million dollar homes. It’s an older home, but with a wonderful location. Some day it will be knocked down for a new build, but they won’t be leaving for a while and are quite happy with their property, except the basement. Floods in their basement aren’t new to them, but being away at work when it happens can be disastrous.
Step in the future son in-law and daughter to man the damage and water. I went over there yesterday to find a pool of water in the basement and the whole carpet soaked. I unplug all electronics, moved as much furniture as possible (propping couches, chairs, wardrobes on top of each other) and try to pull up the carpet to get more air flow and hopefully water to the drains. Next, I place a phone call. Bride to be gets on the horn with the insurance company to see what is covered and what to do.

Since every service company in Toronto that would deal with a problem like this is busy dealing with other more major problems…We need to find a temporary solution until the professionals come in. DE-HUMUDIFIER AND FANS, POWERFUL ONES! I head out on a mission to Canadian Tire to purchase them. Not surprisingly, the shelves are almost empty because everybody’s basement flooded, right? Thank god I find some and set them up in the basement to help air flow and help with moisture. Mold is not good! By no means is this a fix, but can help temporarily. Also, a dry/wet vacuum could really help in this situation to remove existing water.

Below are a few more pics I took that day in a condo building underground parking lot. Intense! I got out okay.
